Question 4

Step by step

  1. 1

STOP: sit down. Don't keep moving. Take slow breaths — in 4, hold 4, out 4.

  2. 2

THINK: what's the most urgent threat? Use the Rule of 3s: ~3 minutes without air, ~3 hours without shelter in harsh weather, ~3 days without water, ~3 weeks without food.

  3. 3

OBSERVE: inventory what you have, the weather, daylight left, and hazards.

  4. 4

PLAN: choose the next single action. Stay put if someone knows where you are.

Question 5

The science

Acute stress narrows attention and impairs judgment; deliberate slow breathing activates the parasympathetic system and restores clearer thinking.

Question 6

Dangers & limits

  • Rule of 3s are rough guides — extreme heat or cold shortens them.

Question 7

How you know it worked

You can say your top priority and next action out loud.
