The Universal Edibility Test

Widely taught, but unreliable and dangerous. Learn positive ID instead.

Question 1

The goal

Understand why this 'test' should not be used.

Question 2

Materials

  • None — use a regional field guide instead

Question 3

Substitutes

  • Positive identification of 3–5 common local plants learned in advance

Question 4

Step by step

  1. 1

Don't use it. Many deadly plants cause no reaction until hours or days later (e.g. water hemlock, death cap).

  2. 2

Before an emergency, learn a few local plants with no toxic look-alikes.

  3. 3

Never eat wild mushrooms in a survival situation.

  4. 4

Remember: adults can survive weeks without food. Water and shelter come first.
