Myth Check: "Free Energy" Magnet Motors and Earth Batteries

Videos claim magnets or buried metal can power your house forever. Here's why they can't — and what to build instead.

Question 1

The goal

Recognize free-energy scams so you spend time and money on methods that actually work.

Question 2

Materials

  • Critical thinking
  • A multimeter (to test claims)

Question 3

Substitutes

  • Real options: solar, power station, car + inverter, generator outdoors

Question 4

Step by step

  1. 1

Know the rule: energy can't be created from nothing (first law of thermodynamics). Every real generator converts some input — sun, wind, fuel, muscle, falling water.

  2. 2

Watch for red flags: 'runs forever', 'no fuel', hidden boxes, cut-away video edits, or selling plans and kits.

  3. 3

Magnets store no usable energy that refills; a magnet 'motor' always stops once friction drains its initial push.

  4. 4

'Earth batteries' (metal rods in soil) are real but tiny — milliwatts, enough maybe for a clock, not a home.

  5. 5

If someone demonstrates one, ask to see it unplugged and disconnected from hidden batteries, and measure output with a meter over hours.

  6. 6

Spend that money on a solar panel and battery instead — a 100 W panel produces real, measurable energy every sunny day.

Question 5

The science

Conservation of energy has been tested to extreme precision. Static magnetic fields do no net work around a closed loop, so a magnet-only machine can't keep turning. Soil-battery cells are galvanic cells with very high internal resistance, giving microamps to milliamps.

Question 6

Dangers & limits

  • Wasted money and false security in an emergency.
  • Some DIY 'free energy' wiring is a shock and fire hazard.

Question 7

How you know it worked

You can explain why the claim fails and name a real method to use instead.
