Thermoelectric Generator on a Stove or Campfire

Heat in, electricity out — a stove-top fan or camp stove generator can charge a phone while you cook.

Question 1

The goal

Charge a phone or run an LED from heat you're already using for cooking or warmth.

Question 2

Materials

  • Commercial thermoelectric camp stove or stove-top TEG module with USB
  • Wood stove or campfire (outdoors) / wood stove (indoors with chimney)
  • Heat-resistant gloves
  • USB cable

Question 3

Substitutes

  • DIY Peltier module + heat sink + water pot (experimental)
  • Stove fan (heat-powered, moves air only)

Question 4

Step by step

  1. 1

Use only on a properly vented wood stove or outdoors — never with a charcoal grill or camp stove indoors (carbon monoxide).

  2. 2

Place the hot side of the module on the stove surface or follow the camp stove's setup.

  3. 3

Make sure the cold side has its heat sink, fan or water pot — the generator needs a big temperature difference.

  4. 4

Wait until the stove is hot (typically 5–10 minutes). The USB indicator lights when power is available.

  5. 5

Plug in the phone in airplane mode.

  6. 6

    Expect about 2–5 W — a phone charge takes 2–4 hours.

  7. 7

Keep cables away from hot surfaces.

  8. 8

Shut down per manufacturer instructions; let it cool before packing.

Question 5

The science

The Seebeck effect: a temperature difference across two different semiconductors pushes electrons from hot to cold, creating a voltage. Efficiency is only ~5%, so most heat still warms the room or pot.

Question 6

Dangers & limits

  • Burns — module and stove are very hot.
  • Overheating destroys modules; follow max temperature ratings.
  • CO: fires and stoves indoors need a chimney and a CO alarm.

Question 7

How you know it worked

Phone gains charge while the stove runs safely.
